Our lovely waterfront location provides a peaceful setting to enjoy knitting with friends, both old and new. We offer day and evening classes, including beginning knitting, crocheting, weaving and specialty classes, private appointments and scheduled drop-in help sessions. We also have special workshops with some of today's most popular and experienced teachers from around the world.

Skill Levels, Homework & Pattern Purchasing

When signing up for a class, please note the skill level required and if there is homework.
If you do not hear about homework from us, please call the shop and inquire. Homework is designated by an * after the class name. 

Novice: Never even held a pair of knitting needles? You are a novice.

Advanced Beginner: Know how to cast on and bind off, knit and purl, increase and decrease without supervision.

Intermediate: Know a variety of stitches, how to use double points, knit in the round, and mid-level shaping without supervision.

Advanced: Know lace stitches and intricate stitch patterns, Fair Isle, and how to short row without supervision.

PATTERN INFORMATION: What does “purchase at shop”, “in-store Ravelry purchase” or “obtain at Ravelry.com” all mean? If a pattern on the ABYC Materials List indicates it can be purchased at the shop, that’s easy. We’ll just charge you for the pattern and hand you a hard copy. Some Ravelry patterns allow you to pay “in-store” and then Ravelry sends it to your Ravelry account or to your personal email. There are still other Ravelry patterns that you can download either free or with payment on your own.

 

 

 NOTE: If there is a class that you would like to take but it’s not offered when you are available, please let us know. Often we get requests to add a class at a different time, day, etc. If there are enough people interested we will certainly try and do that.

Class Policy: Class fee must be paid in advance to reserve your space. Class materials must be purchased at the shop in advance of the class. Teachers reserve the right to cancel a class with less than three sign-ups or a KAL with less than five sign-ups.

Cancellation Policy: Class and workshop fees are refundable or transferable up to two weeks before the start of the class. We cannot refund or transfer after that.

WEAVING WORKSHOPS with CARLA HUBBART

INTRO TO WEAVING*     Skill Level: Novice
Curious about weaving? Learn to weave on a Cricket rigid heddle loom right here at ABYC! You will learn to set up the loom and weave a beautiful scarf using a variety of yarns. This little loom is the equivalent of a 2-harness loom, allowing you to weave items such as table runners, placemats, purses, bags and more.The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom also transfer to other types of looms, including table and floor looms. Another great way to play with fabulous yarns.

NEW! WEAVING HELP WORKSHOP!*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner and up
Need some help? Need some answers? Need to know you’re not alone out there? Then join Carla for this weavers’ help workshop. The morning session will be warping your loom. Bring your yarn, loom and accessories so you can warp in class. The afternoon session will cover weaving techniques, problem solving (broken threads, warping errors) and finishing options. You are welcome to sign up for one or both sessions. This is a review class to reinforce skills learned in previous classes or to get help on specific projects. This is not an alternative to Introduction to Weaving.

Clasped weft weaving is a tapestry technique that produces diagonal lines in the woven fabric. Use clasped weft weaving as a design element to create this flat shoulder bag with cord and tassel embellishments. Celebrate peace and love. Pre-requisite: Completion of "Intro to Weaving" at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom.
Two sessions. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee, if needed

KimonoshawlKIMONOSHAWL*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg./Intermediate
The KimonoShawl combines the best features of two timeless favorites, the kimono jacket and the shawl. After weaving your fabric, and with a minimum of cutting and sewing, you’ll have a jacket with a lovely drape and a shawl with structure. Your KimonoShawl will add the finishing touch to any ensemble. Pre-requisite: Completion of "Intro to Weaving" at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom and have basic sewing skills. Rigid heddle loom 25” minimum required.

colorweaveCOLOR & WEAVE…PLAID’S LITTLE COUSIN*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg./Intermediate
Color-and-weave is a technique that uses a sequence of light, dark and color to create a narrow plaid-like design. Varying the warping sequence and the weft order produces a lively fabric. Pre-requisite: Completion of "Intro to Weaving" at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently. Rigid heddle loom 15" minimum required.
One session. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials

WEAVING WITH HAND-DYED YARN*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg. /Intermediate
Indulge yourself and weave with a beautiful silk/merino blend yarn hand-dyed by RedFish DyeWorks. You’ll create a stunning shawl that will become your favorite wrap. Pre-requisite: Completion of "Intro to Weaving" at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently. Rigid heddle loom 25" minimum required.

DROP-IN HELP with DEBBIE QUINN
Bring in any knitting or crocheting project you need help with. This is also the place to come to get started on a project. You must know basic knitting or crocheting skills to attend these sessions.

DROP-IN HELP with MARY LAMMÉ (knitting only)
We are now offering Drop-in Help with Mary on Monday mornings. In addition to helping you with your knitting projects, Mary is our resident expert on brioche and mosaic knitting. Just remember, you must know basic knitting skills to attend these sessions.

PRIVATE HELP with DEBBIE QUINN
Unable to attend our usual drop-in help sessions or need more individual help? You can schedule a one-hour private appointment with Debbie. Call the shop for more information. Fee is $45 per hour. 

KNIT/CROCHET: BEGINNING & BEYOND*     Skill Level: Novice & Beginner
We now offer a combo class for those who want a beginning knit or crochet class, as well as for those who have completed the basic class but want to move forward with their new skills. Novices will learn the basics of knitting or crocheting with an easy first project. Those who have learned to knit or crochet can spread their wings with assistance.

Pick-a-Knit BlanketPICK-A-KNIT BLANKET*    Skill Level: Adv. Beginner & up
A fun blanket to knit for a new baby or toddler, or adapt it for an adult lap throw. Not only will you learn four different stitches: basket weave, zigzag rib, little checker, and seed stitch, but you will thoroughly enjoy knitting with Appalachian Baby Design’s organic cotton yarn. Knit it in the three suggested colors or select you own colors of this delicious yarn.

Yarn…where does it come from? How do you take care of it? What makes one fiber different from another? How different is it to knit with one over another? Debbie will tell you everything you want to know about, from cashmere to cotton, alpaca to acrylic.

Herbarium Mosaic"HERBARIUM" MOSAIC SHAWL*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner Mosaic
Lisa Hannes' pattern plays with a combination of garter stitch, stripes, and a beautiful mosaic motif. The effect of reversing the two contrasting colors provides extra interest. Herbarium is a large sideways bias-knit triangle. The pattern gives both written and charted instructions. This is a great project for those who have taken Intro to Mosaic.

Now that you've mastered basic brioche, hone your skills to make an asymmetrical shawl. You’ll learn various increases and decreases, finishing techniques, and how to identify and correct errors. By using two contrasting colors you’ll have a lovely reversible shawl to enjoy. Students must know basic brioche knitting — brk ,brp, sl 1 yo.

Fair-Isle-SockFAIR ISLE SOCK KAL*     Skill Level: Intermediate Sock knitter
Add the interesting detail of Fair Isle to your next pair of socks. You have a choice of knitting this sock toe-up or top-down, so as long as you have used one of these methods and know basic Fair Isle (see Sandra's technique class on January 25) you’ll be good to go. Remember, KALs are community support—no real instruction.

TECHNIQUE CLASS: TIPS & TRICKS TO FIX IT*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner & up
If you find you need to back out your knitting to fix a mistake, or maybe aren't sure what to do, come spend a couple of valuable hours learning and practicing a variety of tricks to fix your mistakes. You'll feel empowered!
