Our lovely waterfront location provides a peaceful setting to enjoy knitting with friends, both old and new. We offer day and evening classes, including beginning knitting, crocheting, weaving and specialty classes, private appointments and scheduled drop-in help sessions. We also have special workshops with some of today's most popular and experienced teachers from around the world.

Skill Levels, Homework & Pattern Purchasing

When signing up for a class, please note the skill level required and if there is homework.
If you do not hear about homework from us, please call the shop and inquire. Homework is designated by an * after the class name. 

Novice: Never even held a pair of knitting needles? You are a novice.

Advanced Beginner: Know how to cast on and bind off, knit and purl, increase and decrease without supervision.

Intermediate: Know a variety of stitches, how to use double points, knit in the round, and mid-level shaping without supervision.

Advanced: Know lace stitches and intricate stitch patterns, Fair Isle, and how to short row without supervision.

PATTERN INFORMATION: What does “purchase at shop”, “in-store Ravelry purchase” or “obtain at Ravelry.com” all mean? If a pattern on the ABYC Materials List indicates it can be purchased at the shop, that’s easy. We’ll just charge you for the pattern and hand you a hard copy. Some Ravelry patterns allow you to pay “in-store” and then Ravelry sends it to your Ravelry account or to your personal email. There are still other Ravelry patterns that you can download either free or with payment on your own.

 

 

 NOTE: If there is a class that you would like to take but it’s not offered when you are available, please let us know. Often we get requests to add a class at a different time, day, etc. If there are enough people interested we will certainly try and do that.

Class Policy: Class fee must be paid in advance to reserve your space. Class materials must be purchased at the shop in advance of the class. Teachers reserve the right to cancel a class with less than three sign-ups or a KAL with less than five sign-ups.

Cancellation Policy: Class and workshop fees are refundable or transferable up to two weeks before the start of the class. We cannot refund or transfer after that.

WEAVING WORKSHOPS with CARLA HUBBART

INTRO TO WEAVING*     Skill Level: Novice
Curious about weaving? Learn to weave on a Cricket rigid heddle loom right here at ABYC! You will learn to set up the loom and weave a beautiful scarf using a variety of yarns. This little loom is the equivalent of a 2-harness loom, allowing you to weave items such as table runners, placemats, purses, bags and more.The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom also transfer to other types of looms, including table and floor looms. Another great way to play with fabulous yarns.
One session. Workshop fee: $75, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

Fall 18 Woven Weft Floats Scarf 1WOVEN "WEFT FLOATS" SCARF!*      Skill Level: Adv. Beginner and up
Carrie Laing’s Woven "Weft Floats" Scarf pattern combines a striking design with a luxurious yarn for the loveliest scarf. It will be the perfect gift for someone special, plus you’re sure to want one for yourself. You’ll learn to weave with a pick-up stick to create the “floats.” Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.

Fall 18 Charming Little TowelsCHARMING LITTLE TOWELS!*      Skill Level: Adv. Beginner and up
These special little handwoven towels will be the finishing touch to your holiday decorating – or the perfect gift! You’ll use Brook’s Bouquet, a hand-manipulated lace technique, to create a holiday image in your handwoven towel. Think of all the design possibilities, for placemats, napkins, decorative pillows and more! Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.
One session. Workshop fee: $40, plus materials

stripesandplaidsCHECKS, PLAIDS and STRIPES, OH MY!*      Skill Level: Adv. Beg. and up
Combine color order changes and the rigid heddle’s plain weave structure for incredible design possibilities. “Oh My” is right! Explore these color order changes to create checks, plaids and stripes, and then weave your scarf using one of these elements. Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.
One session. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

Fall-18-2-Heddle-Weaving-1TWO-HEDDLE WEAVING: "DOUBLE THE CUDDLES" BABY BLANKET!*      Skill Level: Intermediate and up
This class teaches you a way to expand your loom’s capabilities using two reeds. You’ll weave in layers to double your weaving width while making a luscious little baby blanket. Pre-requisite: Completion of "Intro to Weaving" at ABYC or equivalent and at least one other weaving class at ABYC. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.
One session. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials 
Sunday, October 28  9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This is the perfect cowl to showcase your favorite yarn. The weaving flows into knitting, knitting into weaving, and continues in an uninterrupted circle. A perfect design for a lovely hand-painted yarn. Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom and knit and purl independently.
Three sessions. Workshop fee: $50, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

DROP-IN HELP with DEBBIE QUINN
Bring in any knitting or crocheting project you need help with. This is also the place to come to get started on a project. You must know basic knitting or crocheting skills to attend these sessions.
Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. plus
Saturdays 9 a.m. - 12 noon and Thursday evenings 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. Session fee: $8.

DROP-IN HELP with MARY LAMMÉ (knitting only)
We are now offering Drop-in Help with Mary on Monday mornings. In addition to helping you with your knitting projects, Mary is our resident expert on brioche and mosaic knitting. Just remember, you must know basic knitting skills to attend these sessions.
Mondays, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Session fee: $8.

PRIVATE HELP with DEBBIE QUINN
Unable to attend our usual drop-in help sessions or need more individual help? You can schedule a one-hour private appointment with Debbie. Call the shop for more information. Fee is $45 per hour. 

KNIT/CROCHET: BEGINNING & BEYOND*   Skill Level: Novice & Beginner
We now offer a combo class for those who want a beginning knit or crochet class, as well as for those who have completed the basic class but want to move forward with their new skills. Novices will learn the basics of knitting or crocheting with an easy first project. Those who have learned to knit or crochet can spread their wings with assistance.
Three sessions. Class fee is $65, plus materials.

This is for all of you who have wanted to enter the world of squishy and comfy brioche knitting. Mary will teach you the basics of two-color brioche and give you the skills to branch out. Just think…there may be brioche hats, scarves, shawls and even sweaters in your future!

Fall 18 Cockleshell Baby Cardi 2COCKLESHELL BABY CARDIGAN*      Skill Level: Adv. Beginner & up
Is that baby shower only a few weeks away? No problem, this precious little cardigan by Amy Christoffers is a breeze to knit up in a soft chunky yarn. It is knit in two pieces, each cast on at the cuff, and then knit all the way to the center back. A beautiful bind-off up the back marries the simple lace pattern. An adorable gift for that special baby.

Fall 18 Brioche Lace Kelp Garden

BRIOCHE LACE “KELP GARDEN” SHAWL*    Skill Level: Experienced Brioche Knitter
Now that you’ve mastered basic brioche, hone your skills with this stunning triangular shawl by Meaghan Schmaltz. By using two contrasting colors you’ll be able to showcase the lovely “lace” design inspired by the kelp bulbs off the shores of La Jolla. Pattern is both written and charted. Students must have experience knitting brioche.

This top-down pattern by Helen Stewart was inspired by the warm sparkle of holiday lights. The sock top features an easy textured pattern which you may want to enhance with a little sparkle in your yarn.

Fall 18 Design Fit Knit for youDESIGN, FIT, KNIT FOR YOU! *     Skill Level: Intermediate
Whether it is a new “go-to” favorite top you’ve been thinking of or different look you want, learn from an experienced “knit it to fit” knitter how use your favorite fitting garment as a guide. For years Diane has discovered yarn in our shop and in a matter of weeks she is wearing it back in…looking as if was custom made (well, it was!) Now she will walk you through her favorite method so you, too, can achieve this kind of success. After you determine the style you want, Diane will also help you select the right DK yarn and simple stitch pattern to use.

In Socks 101 you’ll make your very first sock on larger size dpns with worsted weight yarn. The knitting will be fun, fast and easy and you’ll learn the basics…then you’ll be ready for all those wonderful sock patterns you’ve been admiring around the shop. Students must be comfortable knitting with dpns.

Fall 18 Brioche HatBRIOCHE KNITTING: HAT & SCARF*       Skill Level: Intermediate Brioche
This is for all of you who have some experience knitting brioche and now want to apply it to knitting hats and scarves. Students should be comfortable knitting in the round, but class will teach you brioche specific increases and decreases, plus how to identify errors and correct them. By using two contrasting colors you’ll have an incredibly beautiful reversible project! Students should have experience with basic brioche knitting–brk, brp, sl1yo.
